History

How Annandale came to be

  1. 1685

    Part of the huge Ravensworth tobacco plantation bought by William Fitzhugh.

  2. 1806–1808

    Two turnpikes were built through the area, making it a crossroads.

  3. 1830

    Named after Annan, a town in Scotland.

  4. 1837

    The Annandale post office opened.

  5. 1861–1865

    Troops of both armies moved through during the Civil War.

  6. 1950s–60s

    Post-war growth turned farmland into a suburb for DC workers.

  7. 1965

    Northern Virginia Community College was founded; Annandale became its largest campus.
