What Tysons is like

Tysons has grown from a shopping and office hub into a true urban center. High-rise homes sit next to two major malls, a performing arts hall and four Silver Line stations.

History

How Tysons came to be

  1. 1800s

    Known as Peach Grove, then Tysons Crossroads after landowner William Tyson.

  2. 1968

    Tysons Corner Center opened — at the time, one of the largest enclosed malls in the world.

  3. 2008

    The county adopted a 40-year plan to turn Tysons into a walkable urban center.

  4. 2014

    Four Silver Line Metro stations opened.

  5. 2015

    The Census Bureau changed the name from “Tysons Corner” to “Tysons.”

Real estate tax: $1.12 per $100 of assessed value (FY2027, effective July 1, 2026), set by Fairfax County. Official rates ↗

Virginia also taxes cars and other vehicles yearly (personal property tax), and some areas add small special-district taxes. Older adults and people with disabilities may qualify for tax relief programs.
