What Reston is like

Reston was founded in 1964 as one of America's first modern planned communities. Homes are woven between four lakes, woods and miles of paths, with Reston Town Center and two Metro stations at its core.

History

How Reston came to be

  1. 1964

    Founded on April 10 by Robert E. Simon; the name comes from his initials, R.E.S. + “ton.”

  2. 1967

    Gulf Oil took a controlling interest in the development.

  3. 1996

    Reston Town Center's first phase opened.

  4. 2014

    Wiehle–Reston East Metro station opened.

  5. 2022

    Reston Town Center and Herndon stations opened on the Silver Line.

Four real seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, mostly mild winters with a few snowstorms. Frost-free roughly March 27 to November 18. NOAA 1991–2020 averages at Reagan National Airport (the Dulles corridor runs a few degrees cooler at night and usually gets more snow).
