What Ashburn is like

Ashburn grew from farmland into large planned communities after Dulles Airport opened, and it is now one of Loudoun County's biggest communities. It is also known worldwide as the center of Northern Virginia's data center industry.

History

How Ashburn came to be

  1. 1962

    Dulles International Airport opened just southeast of Ashburn, starting growth across eastern Loudoun.

  2. 1968

    The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad through Ashburn shut down; its path later became the W&OD Trail.

  3. 1992

    Washington's NFL team moved its headquarters and training facility to Ashburn.

  4. 1995

    The Dulles Greenway toll road opened, linking Leesburg, Ashburn and Dulles Airport.

  5. 2006

    The Howard Hughes Medical Institute opened its Janelia research campus in Ashburn.

  6. 2022

    Metro's Silver Line opened Ashburn and Loudoun Gateway stations.

Four real seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, mostly mild winters with a few snowstorms. Frost-free roughly March 27 to November 18. NOAA 1991–2020 averages at Reagan National Airport (the Dulles corridor runs a few degrees cooler at night and usually gets more snow).
