History

How Chantilly came to be

  1. 1763

    The name traces to Richard Henry Lee's estate “Chantilly,” itself named after the French château.

  2. 1862

    Battle of Chantilly (Ox Hill), where Union generals Isaac Stevens and Philip Kearny were killed.

  3. 1962

    Dulles International Airport opened just to the north.

  4. 1980s

    Farmland south of the airport filled in with neighborhoods and business parks.

  5. 2003

    The Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center opened.

Four real seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, mostly mild winters with a few snowstorms. Frost-free roughly March 27 to November 18. NOAA 1991–2020 averages at Reagan National Airport (the Dulles corridor runs a few degrees cooler at night and usually gets more snow).
