History

How Centreville came to be

  1. 1760s

    The area was known as Newgate, after a popular tavern.

  2. 1792

    The Virginia General Assembly established the town of Centreville.

  3. 1861–1862

    Heavily fortified by the Confederacy; the first railroad built only for military use ran here.

  4. 1861 & 1862

    The First and Second Battles of Manassas were fought just to the west.

  5. 1990s–2000s

    Rapid growth turned Centreville into one of the county's largest communities.

Four real seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, mostly mild winters with a few snowstorms. Frost-free roughly March 27 to November 18. NOAA 1991–2020 averages at Reagan National Airport (the Dulles corridor runs a few degrees cooler at night and usually gets more snow).
