History

How Mount Vernon came to be

  1. 1754

    George Washington began living at Mount Vernon; he died there in 1799.

  2. 1805

    Woodlawn, built on land from the Mount Vernon estate, was completed nearby.

  3. 1932

    The Mount Vernon Memorial Highway (today's George Washington Parkway) opened for Washington's 200th birthday.

  4. Post-WWII

    Neighborhoods of mid-century homes filled in along the parkway and Route 1.
