History

How Herndon came to be

  1. 1858

    Named after naval explorer William Lewis Herndon.

  2. 1879

    Incorporated as a town.

  3. Railroad era

    Grew along the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire (later W&OD) Railroad; the old depot is now a museum.

  4. 1962

    Dulles Airport opened just west of town.

  5. 2022

    Herndon and Innovation Center Metro stations opened.

Four real seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, mostly mild winters with a few snowstorms. Frost-free roughly March 27 to November 18. NOAA 1991–2020 averages at Reagan National Airport (the Dulles corridor runs a few degrees cooler at night and usually gets more snow).
