The City of Manassas is a small independent city surrounded by Prince William County, with its own schools, police and city services. It grew up around a railroad junction near the Civil War battlefields and today has a restored historic downtown.

History

How Manassas came to be

  1. 1852

    Railroads met here, creating Manassas Junction between Washington, the Shenandoah Valley and Richmond.

  2. 1861

    The First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) was fought nearby — the first time troops were rushed to a battle by train.

  3. 1862

    The Second Battle of Manassas was fought nearby in late August.

  4. 1873

    The Town of Manassas was chartered.

  5. 1893

    Jennie Dean founded the Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth.

  6. 1975

    Manassas became an independent city, separate from Prince William County.

  7. 2023

    The city celebrated its 150th anniversary and reopened the renovated Manassas Museum.
