Overview
Leesburg, founded in 1758, is the county seat of Loudoun County and one of the largest towns in Virginia. It pairs a historic downtown with newer neighborhoods, where Route 7, Route 15 and the Dulles Greenway meet.
History
The Virginia General Assembly established the town, named for the Lee family; it has always been Loudoun's county seat.
During the War of 1812, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were moved to the Leesburg area for safekeeping.
The first train from Alexandria reached Leesburg, on the line that later became the W&OD Railroad.
The Civil War Battle of Ball's Bluff was fought just outside town.
Gen. George C. Marshall bought Dodona Manor in Leesburg and lived there until 1959.
Leesburg's historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Dulles Greenway opened, linking Leesburg to Dulles Airport.
